Do I need to have any experience?

Nope! Most of our new fencers walk in the door with no experience whatsoever. Many of them have never even seen a fencing match! We’ll teach you everything you need to know about fencing.

I've never been good at sports. Is that okay?

Not only is it okay, it’s very normal! Fencing has a reputation as a sport for people who don’t like—or who aren’t good at—other sports. In fact, many of our incredibly talented fencers started in this exact same position. Our coaches are accustomed to teaching students with little-to-no previous athletic experience, and our beginner classes are designed to teach athletic skills alongside fencing skills.

Do I need to buy my own equipment?

We provide new fencers with all of the equipment they need to get started! If you fall in love with fencing and choose to continue beyond that, we’ll walk you through the equipment you need.

How old do I have to be to fence?

Our youth fencing classes accept students as young as eight. Our fencing classes for older students have teens, young adults, older adults, retirees, and even octogenarians!

Do I really get to swordfight?

Yes! That’s why we’re here. Our beginner fencing program will teach you all of the skills you need to fence a real bout. Now, it might not look like you see in the movies—but we think the real thing is even cooler. You can take a peek at USA Fencing’s YouTube channel to see what fencers look like in action.
